TRICHY: A DMK official in Trichy was convicted of rioting and criminal intimidation based on a complaint from a company supplying blue metal to Kulithalai, Karur district, alleging damage to his office on Thursday.
According to the plaintiff M Kamalan, director of Navamani Mines private limited, more than 50 people attacked the office on Wednesday and damaged property worth Rs2 lakh.
Kulithalai police arrested five people and convicted Mr. Palaniyandi, a DMK official from Trichy, and 50 others for riots, criminal intimidation and property damage.
Palaniyandi, owner of a blue metal crushing unit in Kulithalai, had previously filed a complaint with the Kulithalai police station against Navamani Mines for installing a crushing unit near his quarry.
“His employees as well as a few foreigners attacked my office and damaged property,” Kamalan said.
Kulithalai DySP M Kummaraja said that there is a dispute between the two crushing units which are located within one kilometer, although there are standards that a crushing unit should not be established within one km the other. There is a court stay order against Navamani blue metals to start operations.
Following complaints, five staff members of Rathnagireeswarar Blue Metal were arrested.
Speaking to YOU, Palaniyandi denied attacking them. He said the Navamani Blue Metals operate with the support of the ruling party and conduct operations in violation of standards.
